Most food in the Emirates arrives as cargo before it arrives as a meal; our work is the trading, logistics and counsel in between.

What Kaelo does in this sector

In food and agriculture we do three things, and only three: we import and trade non-specialised food lines under our UAE trading licence; we advise family-owned food distribution businesses; and we market food brands. We are not agronomists, food scientists or cold-chain operators, and we do not pretend to be. What we bring is a trader's competence — goods bought well, moved cleanly through Dubai, and sold with intent.

Our trading activity covers the import, export and general trading of non-specialised goods, and in food that means the unglamorous majority of the category: dry goods, packaged and shelf-stable lines, ingredients and consumables that travel by container and sit safely in ordinary warehousing. The disciplines involved — verifying a supplier before money moves, negotiating terms that survive a bad season, getting the documentation right the first time — are the same ones our textile trading lineage has practised since 1989. Food changes the paperwork; it does not change the craft.

Bringing food into the UAE is mostly a documentary problem before it is a physical one. A shipment must arrive with the right certificates, labelling that satisfies the municipality, and customs classifications that will not unravel at the port. We handle the commercial and documentary side of that work — contracts, letters of credit, shipping documents, co-ordination with clearing agents — and we are candid that municipality registration and food-safety attestation are matters for the regulatory specialists we work alongside, not services we perform ourselves.

Our consultancy practice takes a particular interest in family-owned food distribution businesses, because we recognise the shape of them: founder-led buying, principal relationships held together by personal trust, working capital sleeping in a warehouse, and a next generation with different ideas. We are a privately held business ourselves, so the counsel is practical rather than theoretical — pricing and stockholding discipline, the terms of a distribution agreement, and what the founder should keep against what the firm should systematise before they step back.

Where our applied-AI practice earns its place in that work, we use it plainly: demand forecasting on lines with real history, cleaning the sales and distribution data a family firm has accumulated but never quite trusted, automating the reporting a principal keeps asking for. Where it does not earn its place, we say so and leave it out.

For food brands, our marketing practice does what it does in every sector: positioning that is true, content that looks the way the product actually looks, and performance campaigns judged on sales rather than applause. In this category that usually means building a brand's presence across retail, e-commerce and delivery platforms in the UAE, in both English and Arabic. We market food; we do not formulate it, and we will not write claims a product's label cannot support.

The honest edges of our offer, stated plainly: we do not trade fresh or frozen produce, we do not operate cold chains or warehousing, we do not certify food safety, and our sourcing network was built in textiles — India, Indonesia, Japan and Malaysia are where we buy fabric, not food. If your question sits inside those edges, we are worth a conversation. If it does not, we will tell you quickly and, where we can, point you to someone better placed.

Common questions

Do you trade fresh, chilled or frozen food?
No. Our licence and our competence cover general trading of non-specialised goods, which in food means shelf-stable and packaged lines. We do not operate cold chains and will not improvise one for the sake of a contract. If your product needs temperature-controlled handling you need a specialist partner, and we can still act on the commercial and documentary side alongside them.
Can you manage UAE food import registration and labelling?
We manage the commercial and documentary work: contracts, shipping documents, customs co-ordination with clearing agents. Municipality product registration and Arabic labelling compliance are handled with regulatory specialists we bring in, rather than services we perform ourselves. We are precise about where our role ends, because a shipment held at port gets expensive exactly when someone was vague about that.
What does consultancy for a family food-distribution business involve?
It usually starts with a founder, a warehouse, and a set of questions about margin, principals and succession. We work through pricing and stockholding, the health of distribution agreements, and which decisions should move from the founder's head into the firm's systems. Where applied AI genuinely helps — forecasting, cleaning years of sales data — we build it in; where it would be decoration, we leave it out.
Can you source food products for us from Asia?
Not as a general service. Our sourcing relationships in India, Indonesia, Japan and Malaysia were built for fabric, and we do not pretend they transfer wholesale to food. Where a specific packaged line sits within our reach to verify properly, we will consider it as a trading position and tell you honestly either way; a broad food-sourcing mandate is not something we would take on.
