What it is

The marketing plan should start from your occupancy report, because empty pallet positions earn nothing.

A principal, Kaelo Global digital marketing

A 3PL marketing strategy has to fit the way shippers buy warehousing and fulfilment. In the 2026 Third-Party Logistics Study, a little over half of shippers said they do not rebid business when a contract ends. So an account you want may come to market once and then renew with whoever won it, and its supply-chain head has to know you before that RFP is written.

Our marketing for a 3PL does 4 jobs. We prove your integration, because 90% of shippers in the same study rank technology among the most critical factors in choosing a 3PL. We sell the space you actually have free, site by site. We run account-based marketing on LinkedIn aimed at the supply-chain heads of the companies you name. And we help you keep the accounts you hold, since a shipper that does not rebid is renewing with someone, and that someone can be you.

How shippers buy 3PL capacity, and why many accounts stay put

We rely on the annual Third-Party Logistics Study, sponsored by Penske Logistics with NTT DATA, for evidence on how shippers buy. Its 2026 edition found that service level agreements are the most common way to connect a shipper and a 3PL, and that a little over half of shippers do not rebid business when a contract ends.

That second finding shapes the whole plan. A shipper you want picks a provider through an RFP and, more often than not, renews with that provider without a new bid. Your chance to be invited comes before the RFP, while the supply-chain head is still deciding whom to ask, and the next chance may be a full contract term away.

When the RFP does arrive, systems weigh heavily. In the same study, 90% of shippers ranked technology capabilities among the most critical factors in choosing a 3PL, hence the systems answers deserve as much preparation as the price.

The buyer's side of this process, from the question bank to the exit terms, is covered under selecting a 3PL or 4PL. The study is not a Gulf survey, so we use its figures for direction only.

Integration a shipper's IT team can check

Every 3PL says it integrates. The shipper's EDI analyst wants to know which transactions you exchange in production today. Where the shipper trades on X12, expect these sets, as X12 defines them:

  • 940 Warehouse Shipping Order: the depositor tells the warehouse to ship, or changes or cancels an order it sent earlier.
  • 945 Warehouse Shipping Advice: the warehouse confirms the shipment was made, so both sides can reconcile ordered against shipped quantities.
  • 943 Warehouse Stock Transfer Shipment Advice: the depositor or its agent tells the receiving location a transfer shipment has been made.
  • 944 Warehouse Stock Transfer Receipt Advice: the receiving location confirms the transfer has arrived.
  • 856 Ship Notice/Manifest, the ASN: lists the contents of a shipment. It also carries detail such as order information and the physical characteristics of the goods.

The pairs matter as much as the sets. A 945 closes a 940, and a 944 closes a 943. When the second half arrives late or short, the shipper's team reconciles by hand.

With your IT team's sign-off, we publish:

  • An integration page listing each set you run in production, and any still in testing.
  • Your onboarding steps for a new trading partner, with the time they take if you can evidence it.
  • How you handle an exception, such as a 945 that reports a short shipment against its 940.
  • Answers for the systems section of an RFP, kept current by a named owner, as in our RFQ response work for forwarders.

Security claims need the same care. In the 2027 Third-Party Logistics Study, 69% of 3PLs were extremely satisfied with their technology defences against freight theft, against 36% of shippers. Describe your controls and let the shipper's team judge them, because your confidence is not yet the buyer's.

3PL lead generation that follows your occupancy

A 3PL earns on occupied space, so we plan from your occupancy report, by site and by storage type, and change the plan when the report changes. Ambient racking, chilled rooms, bonded space and open floor sell to different shippers, so each gets its own campaign. A site that is full gets no new demand, because a lead you cannot place costs you twice, once in media and again in the shipper's memory of being turned away.

Capacity is also a contract term. In the 2026 study, 67% of shippers used guaranteed volume or capacity in their 3PL contracts. We advertise only the space you can commit for a full term, since the shipper may write that commitment into the contract.

Flexible termination works the other way. In the same study 62% of shippers used it, which means space you have sold can come back before the term ends. We keep a standing campaign and a reserve list of accounts ready for that day, so a lost client becomes a sales brief straight away.

For smaller accounts that buy space without a formal RFP, we start 3PL lead generation with search and build a page for each site and storage type, using the method on our page about SEO for freight forwarders. The rule is the one our logistics marketing practice applies to lanes: the budget follows the capacity you can actually sell.

LinkedIn ABM for 3PLs, within the platform's list limits

Account-based marketing suits a 3PL because the buyers are few and you can name them. LinkedIn's own limits then decide how the list is built:

  • The Company Names option takes up to 200 company names, with no upload.
  • An uploaded company list needs at least 300 rows, and can hold up to 300000 rows or 20 MB.
  • A list must match at least 300 member accounts before it can run in an active ad set. LinkedIn recommends 1000 or more companies.
  • Building the audience can take up to 48 hours.
  • A list expires if it is not used in an active or draft ad set within 90 days.

Those limits leave a gap. A list of 250 named accounts is too long for the Company Names option and too short to upload, and a focused 3PL list can land there.

So we split the list into tiers. Up to 200 accounts you would write a proposal for go into Company Names and see the specific material, such as your integration page and the free capacity at the site that would serve them. A wider list of 1000 or more companies goes in as a Matched Audiences upload with each company's LinkedIn Page URL, since LinkedIn names the Page URL as the most efficient way to match. That tier sees the broader case for outsourcing to you. Between tender seasons the uploaded list stays attached to a draft ad set, because a lapsed list has to be uploaded and built again.

On top of the company list we target supply-chain and procurement functions at director level and above. Shippers in the 2027 study ranked trust and open communication first in a strategic partnership, followed by operational excellence and agility. So the ads show how you report and escalate, with a named contact.

Where your contract values cannot carry LinkedIn's costs, our page on B2B advertising without LinkedIn sets out the alternatives.

The renewal is a sale too

If a little over half of shippers do not rebid, your current accounts are a sales pipeline as well as an operation. In the 2026 study, 57% of shippers used contract extensions, and an extension is a renewal without a tender. So we treat your account base as a marketing audience, with its own material and its own calendar.

The 2027 study gives a reason to work at it. Shippers linked 39% of their outsourced logistics spend to strategic partnerships, while 3PLs linked 54% of their revenue to them. The figures measure different things, yet they point the same way: a 3PL can call an account a partnership before the shipper does.

We build the renewal material with your account teams. The core is a quarterly review pack that reports against the KPIs in the contract, in the definitions both sides signed. Our page on defining logistics KPIs such as perfect order covers how to write those definitions so they hold up. The same pack is where you make the case for the next site or sales channel, before a competitor does.

What's included

Five areas of scope
01

Account lists drawn from your sites

We list the shippers whose storage and order profiles fit the sites you run, and the supply-chain heads inside them. Every campaign starts from that list.

02

Integration proof in the shipper's language

An integration page and a bank of RFP answers that state which X12 sets you run in production and which are still in testing. Your IT team signs off every line.

03

Campaigns that follow occupancy

Demand generation opens and pauses by site and storage type against the free space you report each week, because a lead you cannot place wastes the spend and the shipper's goodwill.

04

LinkedIn ABM for supply-chain heads

Named accounts through the Company Names option, and a wider uploaded list matched on LinkedIn Page URLs that we keep from expiring between tender seasons.

05

Renewal material for your account teams

Quarterly review packs written against the KPIs in each contract, so the case for renewal is made well before anyone mentions a tender.

How the work runs

STEP 01

Occupancy and account review

We start with your free space by site and storage type, and the accounts you most want to win or keep.

STEP 02

Integration inventory

With your IT team we list the transaction sets you run live today, and those still in testing. Everything we publish about your systems comes from that list.

STEP 03

Account lists and launch

We build the named and wider account lists and write the ads for each tier. Launch waits until LinkedIn has built the audiences, which can take up to 48 hours.

STEP 04

Monthly written report

Engagement by account tier, conversations with named accounts, RFP invitations and pallet positions contracted against the free space. Written plainly, with numbers you can check.

When to come to us

  1. 01You have space to sell, from a new site or a client that is leaving.
  2. 02Your best accounts came through RFPs and you want to be invited to more of them.
  3. 03You run EDI with shippers today, and nothing on your website or in your proposals says so.
  4. 04You can name the companies you would most like to win.
  5. 05Renewals are coming up and you would like them to stay renewals.

What we do not do

  • Publishing transaction sets or integrations you do not run in production.
  • Generating demand for a site that is already full.
  • Naming your clients or publishing their volumes.
  • Promising capacity or service levels on your behalf.

Common questions

Does LinkedIn advertising work for a 3PL?
It can, when the account list is specific and the contract values support the cost. For a 3PL selling small pallet volumes to many merchants, we usually start with search and site pages.
If many shippers do not rebid, where does new business come from?
From the moments an account does move: a new market, a new sales channel, a provider that has stopped performing, or a contract the shipper does put out to tender. Account-based marketing keeps you known to the supply-chain head in the meantime, so you are on the list when that moment comes.
Should we publish our free space on the website?
Only if someone owns the update. A weekly figure by site and storage type helps a shipper who needs space soon, and a stale figure costs you that shipper's trust. Without an owner, publish the storage types and let your desk confirm availability.
Do you write our EDI specifications?
No. Your IT team or your EDI provider owns the specifications and the mapping. We turn what they confirm into pages and RFP answers a supply-chain head can read, and nothing goes out without their sign-off.
