In 2024 our marketing and media work, which until then had been a department supporting the consultancy and our own label, was brought together as a standalone practice, digital marketing. The change reflected what had already happened. The team had grown, the standard the work was held to had tightened, and the practice needed its own accountability rather than sitting inside someone else's.
The activity was set out as a full practice covering brand strategy and identity, digital and performance marketing, public relations and communications, content and thought leadership, social media management, media production and creative, influencer partnerships, web and digital build, and analytics and performance. Each area is held by a named principal, and each is measured against a written standard instead of a feeling about the work.
One principle was deliberately written into the arrangement: the studio works only from Dubai. It is a working team rather than a remote project room. Where a client needs people on the ground elsewhere, the Dubai team travels, and the studio itself is not franchised or spread across offices. That is what protects the standard.
Since then the practice has narrowed rather than widened. Most of the work is now for logistics and freight businesses, speciality clinics and the advertising channels beyond the large platforms, which are the areas where our own experience is genuinely useful. Saying no to work outside those areas has been the harder half of the decision and the more valuable one.
The practice is also judged differently from most agencies. We report the cost of winning a customer and the margin left after advertising, instead of impressions and reach, and we set up the measurement before the spending starts. That order matters. A campaign measured properly can be corrected in its second week, while a campaign measured badly is argued about for a quarter and then quietly renewed.
The way engagements are run is consistent with the rest of the business: written scope, named accountability, and no growth for its own sake. The standing rule of the practice is to publish less and to be able to defend all of it, including years later.
